Gemstone Engagement Rings ~& one of my favorite pieces in our Etsy store right now

I have always been obsessed with the royals, even though I am not English or from England. Maybe it is the glamorous fashion, the living in a castle full time, or wearing a crown on a random Tuesday; I am convinced that I should have royal blue blood in my veins.

Being in the jewelry industry for most of my life, I have come into contact with many sparkly things. I have my favorites that I lust over as they come and go. I often get enchanted by a diamond that is completely flawless, or a vintage piece with a history, or a gemstone ring that I fantasize may have been a part of the crown jewels. This week I want to highlight one of my favorite pieces in our store right now. Behold this blue sapphire engagement ring!!! ~~

Blog

This ring has had me captivated since it first came up for sale and was photographed. It just screams royalty to me! It has a natural, oval faceted cut, blue sapphire in the center with a double halo of diamonds gently encircling it. The sides of the halo have an open infinity type shank that compliments the halo nicely. This particular sapphire has been certified by GIA (Gemological Institute of America) by a graduate gemologist and weighs 3.10cts. It has a deep but lively blue color that is rich and eye-catching. The diamonds are a high quality to add a touch more sparkle to the exquisite sapphire. The setting is crafted from luxurious 18K white gold. I may not have been born into the royal family but this ring would sure make any girl feel like a princess.

Blog 2

If you are thinking about a possible gemstone ring for your engagement or wedding ring like Princess Kate, bear in mind that dark blue is a very versatile color. Again, I am obsessed with the princess’ every move and fashion choice. I have seen her wear tailored suits, formal ball gowns, low key casual dresses, and even jeans. All the while her sapphire ring is just dazzling away and complimenting her wide range of wardrobe choices. The dark blue color looks elegant with other blue pallets, but also blends well with greens, black, reds, yellows and even pinks. I don’t know if we are ready to accept blue as a neutral yet but it is safe to say that sapphire blue will find an easy home among your day-to-day clothing colors!

If you don’t know about our store, we do offer a wide range of estate and vintage pieces. Our pieces have a story and a history, but are ready to have a new life with you. Our pieces are all inspected and evaluated by our GIA trained Accredited Jewelry Professionals and our master jeweler cleans and polishes each piece by hand to make sure it is ready to take your breath away! Thank you for reading and Happy Friday!

Chains, Chains, Chains for Days

There are so many different kinds of chains out there. From the ones that you know by sight but don’t know the name of, to the ones that have always been a front runner of fashion, chains are here to stay. Necklaces or chains have been worn to enhance your natural beauty with something sparkly or to denote your economic position. These accessories worn around the neck or wrist have so many choices, and each one has personality that can fit yours. Below, we examine the most common chains, and maybe even some you didn’t know about.

ROPE:

Well this one speaks for itself. The rope chain looks just like a rope. Consisting of cords twisted together to form a super strong, durable link, the rope chain has been around in hip hop for decades and is seen in many different thicknesses and lengths. Also, there is a diamond cut rope that has a bit of sparkle for a more feminine look. Rope chains are usually the “go to” chain to wear pendants on since they are ultra strong and will stand the test of time. There are hollow rope chains and solid ones. Obviously the solid ones are going to extremely durable, but the price tag will also be hefty if it is made of gold. But even if the rope chain that you have is hollow, it can still carry its weight.

FIGARO:

Ahhh, the figaro. You know you have seen this one, especially if you are a mid-80’s baby like myself. These necklaces were huge in the 1990s and have never really left. Men will gravitate to this link because it is more modern than the rope and has a sleek alternating pattern to it. This is also a very sturdy chain since most of the time each individual link is soldered. It can hold pendants and will even look good worn alone.

MARINER’S:

This chain has a flat, polished look to it. It also has a nautical theme, hence the name. This one has a bit more flare to it than the figaro chain. The mariner link chain is often worn just as a chain without a pendant since it usually is chosen in a wider link. Also, a small millimeter size on this chain can be a great choice for a lady. Because of its polished flat links, it catches the light as you move.

ANCHOR:

The anchor chain does not look like an anchor and is often mistaken for the mariner chain. It looks very similar but the links are not flat, they have more of a “puffiness” to them. It has the look of the chain that you might actually see in a shipyard. Very nautical and fun, this one can be worn alone for a minimal look or can support a pendant if you choose.

HERRINGBONE:

This one will definitely be recognizable to you 80s babies. Herringbone chains were a must have during those days. Keep in mind that all those 80s fashions are starting to peak back into style. With the herringbone chain you just have to always store it flat, not wear a pendant on it, and not sleep in it. If you do, you will end up with the twisted, stretched look that doesn’t look good on anyone. The polished, smoothness of the herringbone can resemble that of an omega collar. This makes the herringbone still sleek and modern in my book.

BOX:

This one is my personal favorite! The box chain looks great with most pendants and has a very understated appearance that will not take away from the design of your charm. With four polished sides of each individual link, the box chain catches the light nicely when worn. Also, for girls, the box will not get caught in your hair or tangle up. A very good choice!

CABLE:

Very classy! The cable link is probably the most basic as far as chains go. With just a circle (or oval) link soldered to another, you wouldn’t think that this chain would be much to look at. But…this one has a very sophisticated look to it whether worn alone or worn with a pendant. The rolo link is very similar but has a little bit chunkier individual links.

SERPENTINE:

This one is very unique. It almost appears to have an “S” pattern printed on the flat profile of the link. This one, like the herringbone, can get twisted up easily so just be carful if you choose to put a pendant on it. Maybe opt for a lightweight charm to be safe.

SNAKE:

Another one that is a go-to for me. This rounded, smooth, snake-like (for lack of a better descriptive word) link can compliment a wide array of different pendant choices. From a jeweler’s perspective this one can easily get stretched out so be careful about the weight of the piece you choose. This one can also kink up if not stored properly. Try to keep it flat and not hang it on a hook.

CURB:

This one reminds me of my brother. He used to wear a sterling silver curb chain when we were teenagers. This one is a widespread favorite among men because of its masculine and sturdy appearance. To me, it has a very classic and industrial look to it.

WHEAT:

Woven, intricate, and luxurious is what I think of with a wheat chain. This chain has a gorgeous design to it that gives off an internally textured appearance. The wheat chain can stand alone by itself easily and is strong enough to support a pendant. Make sure the pendant doesn’t get lost in the shadows of this amazing chain though.

SINGAPORE:

I have seen this chain worn a lot by itself on ladies. It has a delicate, dainty, sparkly look to it that is very eye-catching. It does have a twist to the link that can get kinked so be careful with charms.

June’s Birthstone ~ Pearl

Pearls are one of June’s claimed birthstones. Unlike other birthstones that come from minerals, pearls are organic and created from living beings. This special miracle of Mother-nature starts inside a mussel or oyster. When an irritant lodges itself inside the shell, there is a calcium carbonate build up along with other proteins that form around the irritant creating the pearl. Natural pearls are found all over the world including places like Australia, Japan, Central America, the Persian Gulf, off the coast of Madagascar, Burma, the Philippines, Tahiti, Fiji, and South America. Natural river pearls are found in Asia, Europe, and North America. Natural pearls are rare and expensive thus cultured pearls have become popular as a way to supply the demand for the luxurious beauties.  Cultured pearls are formed when humans assist the process by placing the irritant directly inside the shell. These different types of developments both result in a pearl. Another way to think about it is getting ice from your freezer or getting ice from an iceberg in Antarctica. Ice is ice. Both processes whether natural or helped along by man, produces the luster of a shiny pearl that does not need to be cut or polished. Interestingly enough, one easy way of determining if a pearl is genuine or imitation is to gently rub it against your teeth. If you feel a gritty type of texture, you have a real pearl on your hands. A smooth texture will mean that you have an imitation pearl. Pearls are a recognized status symbol of glamour. From being a primary feature in films such as “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” to being a classic accessory to be worn on brides, pearls have and will always be in style. The other beautiful attribute of pearls is that they look flattering on every skin tone. Pearl earrings are considered classy in the business world and in the romantic world. A pearl strand necklace is the perfect gift for a graduate starting at the ground floor of building their dreams and is also the perfect gift for a mother celebrating her 60th birthday. A pearl ring, although delicate and fragile, would be a prized possession for a sweetheart on Valentine’s Day or for a grandmother on Mother’s Day. So even if you are not one of the lucky ones celebrating a birthday this month, you can still adorn yourself with one of nature’s prized natural wonders. To help you start your pearl collection we are offering 20% on pearl jewelry this month on our Etsy site. Just use “APPRECIATION20” at checkout to receive your discount.

Father’s Day Jewelry Gift Ideas

1) Watches

If you are like me, you may not know that men love watches. If you have a man in your life, you will probably notice that he wears at least one watch every day. He may actually use this watch to tell the time while on the job, he may have a TomTom watch (Click Here  – to see a TomTom watch for sale at one of our other online stores) that he uses to track his runs, or he may wear a watch as a statement piece. But what most people don’t realize is that men just love timepieces. The intricate mechanics, the gears and circuits, used to make a watch appeal to the classical view of the world that men see. Women tend to have a more romantic view of the world and see the flashy accessory itself and not the workings of what makes the watch “tick.” For this reason, a pocket watch, retro watch, or even a dress watch is an excellent idea for a gift. You can also incorporate the year of the watch into the gift idea. Think of a child’s birth year or a specific date that would create a special memory. Or, you could have the back of the case engraved.

2) Chains or Necklaces

A necklace may already be in your man’s wardrobe but if not, this is a no brainer. A chain is a minimal yet still valuable investment type of gift. Men will appreciate a gold or silver chain not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for the value of the noble metal that is was crafted from. A rope or Figaro chain is a safe option for guys that just want something sturdy and strong to wear every day. If your guy is open to more of a trendy piece that can still meet the challenge of every day wear, you might want to spring for a nautical theme “mariner” or “Cuban” link chain that is a little more unique.

3) Charms

Let’s say that the man in your life already has his favorite chain that he wears every day and he isn’t opposed to wearing jewelry. You could add a sentimental charm to his necklace. When I say “sentimental” you can choose any number of different avenues to go down. If he loves to fish how about a fish charm or anchor charm. If he loves the outdoors and hunting, maybe a deer head or gun charm. Also, an initial charm with his last name is a good option too; this celebrates the legacy of his family heritage. If you are celebrating a father’s first Father’s Day, think about birthstones or an iconic symbol that will resonate with him.

4) Bracelets

Last year may have been the year of the necklace or charm, why not think about a matching bracelet. Just because our men folk are manly doesn’t mean that they don’t like symmetry and matching things. A bracelet with a lobster clasp is a safe option for a guy so that he can wear and enjoy his bracelet without fear of losing it. Most chunky links like the Figaro are soldered at each link, so this piece will stand the test of time and will also have the noble metal value.

5) Rings

From years and years of talking with men and helping them pick out rings for themselves, there is a common trend in what they look for. Men like artisan designs, stellar craftsmanship, and something unique. So take that to heart and do not worry so much about the actual size of the ring, jewelers can always resize it after you have presented the gift. If you want to add a stone accent, keep in mind that diamond is the hardest mineral known to man. Sapphires then follow as being a durable stone choice to be worn on the hand every day.
