A look back at 2016 ~ the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

This last week of December always gets me confused. I never know what day it is or what I’m supposed to be doing. I am always excited for the New Year though. The new possibilities, the new experiences…the upcoming year’s potential is pretty wide open.

As I was looking through social media today and over the past week, I noticed that the consensus was that 2016 was a hard year. Most of my friends expressed that they are ready to put 2016 to bed and wake up to 2017.

Here is a little look back at some (world, entertainment, and fun) events that I recalled from this year. I would love to hear from you too, if there were events that were meaningful and special to you.

In technology, NASA’s spacecraft Juno orbited Jupiter and the first solar powered plane completed a trip around the world.

In entertainment, Leonardo DiCaprio finally won an Oscar, Queen Elizabeth turned 90, Hamilton the musical became a sensation on and off Broadway, and Pokemon Go got everyone off their butts and out walking around. Also, my favorite Great British Bake off is coming back!

The summer Olympics had me quite captivated this year in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. And the Chicago Cubbies won the World Series after 108 years. They are no longer our lovable losers but they are still lovable!

We had quite a controversial and ground breaking presidential race. Hillary Clinton became the first woman to be nominated for the presidency by a major US presidential party but ultimately Donald Trump dominated. It also left the American people quite interested and confused by the Electoral College and how it works.

The bad was the loss of many greats. This year we lost David Bowie, Muhammad Ali, John Glenn, Alan Thicke, Carrie Fisher, and Debbie Reynolds, just to name a few. These are not including our beloved family members and friends.

The ugly part of the year started with the horrible attacks in Brussels and Nice, France. My heart still goes out to the families where this tragedy will not just end with the starting of a new year.

With the hard parts of this year, I will leave the words of one of my favorite uncles. Myron had a long hard fight with cancer for over 11 years and this year he was laid to rest. He would always say, “Enjoy your life while you’re living it.”  I plan to make that the major point for 2017!
